Farm Aid for Southern Growers May Not Meet Deadline

WASHINGTON-(AP)--A spokeswoman for the Senate Agriculture Committee says a $1.5 billion farm-disaster package sought by Arkansas Sen. Blanche Lincoln may not be funded by the end of August as promised by the White House.

Lincoln had received a commitment from the Office of Management and Budget that the aid package would be funded administratively by Tuesday. Spokeswoman Courtney Rowe on Monday said it's possible that it may not be funded by then, but said Lincoln is confident it will be soon.

Lincoln chairs the Senate Agriculture Committee. She is a Democrat seeking re-election and running against Republican Congressman John Boozman.

Boozman and Republicans have criticized the aid package and have called it an attempt to help Lincoln out politically during a tough campaign.
